Pun Design

Cat + Butterfly + Peony

Punning Details

– ‘mao 猫 cat’ makes a pun on ‘mao 耄’

– ‘die 蝶 butterfly’ in ‘hu die 蝴蝶 butterfly’ is a pun on ‘die 耋 octogenarian’, indicating ‘a ripe old age’

– ‘fu gui 富贵’ in ‘fu gui hua 富贵花 peony’ literally, the ‘flower of wealth and prestige’, which is a nickname of ‘mu dan 牡丹 peony’

Therefore, the motif combination of cat, peony and butterfly conveys an auspicious wish for wealth, prestige and longevity in later life.

It can also be called ‘Fu Gui Mao Die 富贵耄耋’ in Chinese with the exact same meaning.
